GIS Mapping

Cost Effectively Establish a GIS Component for Your Office

A Geographic Information System (GIS) can help an organization prepare maps for reporting, presentations, planning, analyses and decisions-making. However, purchasing a complete GIS system may not be cost effective for the majority of organizations. PSA can quickly generate digital maps, images, drawings of any part of the entire Philippines up to barangay division merged together with the rendered data.

Definition of GIS

GIS combines maps with an organization’s data which are tagged with geographic information (e.g. crime related incidents). This allows the data to be filed as layers of information over the map. This makes it easy for an organization to perform complex analyses of their data and to present this information in a way which is highly visual and can be easily understood by readers in map form. The organization can also create interactive queries (user created searches), analyze spatial information, edit data, maps, and present the results of all these operations.

Digital Base Map Description

The available digital base map product of the entire Philippines in barangay division has the following features:

  • Barangay boundaries (with names and geocodes)
  • City/municipal boundaries (with names and geocodes)
  • Provincial boundaries (with names and geocodes)
  • Regional political subdivisions (with names and geocodes)
  • Rivers and creeks (with names)
  • Primary roads (with names)
  • Secondary roads (with names)
  • Provincial capitol locations (with names)
  • City/municipal hall locations (with names)
Our maps are converted into digital form using MapInfo GIS software. It was based from various sources such as paper maps (from NAMRIA, assessor’s offices, provincial/city/municipal planning offices), aerial photographs, satellite images, and other digital maps.

Base maps were then scanned and digitized using the following projections:
  • UTM Zone 50, Palawan
  • UTM Zone 51, Luzon
  • UTM Zone 50, Northern Hemisphere (WGS 84)
  • UTM Zone 50, Southern Hemisphere (WGS 84)
  • UTM Zone 51, Northern Hemisphere (WGS 84)
  • UTM Zone 51, Southern Hemisphere (WGS 84)
  • Mercator
  • PTM
  • L/L (WGS 84)
  • L/L (Luzon for Mindanao Island)
  • L/L (Luzon for Philippines)
  • L/L (for insignificant projection)
After digitizing the maps were then generalized and standardized in Longitude/Latitude (L/L) Projection.

The accuracy of the available digital base maps are in +-30 meter radius for Metro Manila Street map and in variation ranging from 50-100 meter radius outside of Metro Manila including Visayas and Mindanao.
